Ignatian Examen (Looking Back on Your Day)
January 25, 2010
Ending our day with some kind of thought to the day behind us seems like a rich luxury sometimes. I mean, I think we all know about ending the day with that flop to the pillow and the 43 seconds before we pass out. We’re just so tired… we have too much going on sometimes, or perhaps just wiped out from being bombed by things that want our attention.
One neat practice for spiritual health is Ignatian Examen. Named after St. Ignatius, who brought this to us, it’s a way to end the day, or begin a new one really, with some kind of reflective thought – primarily seeking how God has been involved in our day or how we’ve unfortunately managed to avoid Him.
Here’s a version of this kind of practice provided through Mars Hill church in Michigan (cf. Rob Bell): http://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http://marshill.org/pdf/sp/PrayerOfExamenShort.pdf.
Check it over. Maybe it’ll be of some help.

The Examen is a wonderful way to review the day. For several variations on how to incorporate this prayer practice, check out: http://ignatianspirituality.com/ignatian-prayer/the-examen/
